“The Man of Small Stature”

“A man of small stature once approached me at the Rapid Ride stop on Carlisle and Central Ave. Our conversation was quite delightful and included a cornucopia of pressing topics, ranging from the weather and favorite alcohol to mixed martial arts and domestic cheeses. I was satisfied with our short-lived exchange of pleasantries until he quickly changed his demeanor and asked, “Have you ever felt that your life is in danger?” He then began to stare at my Danish watch with the beady eyes of a feathered predator. I could tell that he meant business, so I turned to him and replied, “Every damn day. Life is a battle.” Puzzled by my unexpected response, the man of small stature turned and walked away with nothing more to say. I continued my journey on the Red Line to Unser Ave.”
